Mugwort, my digestion lifesaver

September 5, 2010

My stomach lifesaver this week is mugwort!  It may sound like a character from Lord of the Rings, but it’s actually an herb of many wonders.  I bought a couple of ounces of it in a brown paper bag for $3 from Community Services Unlimited‘s weekly farmer produce stand (see previous post here for more info).  The bag came with a customized label saying:

Traditionally used to treat insomnia, increase appetite, calm digestion, and sooth the nerves.  Goes well in tea, and, in East Asia, mugwort is used to flavor desserts.

I have added a thumb bunch worth of mugwort into my Yogi Egyptian licorice mint tea.  I drank this blend and found relief after eating about 3 slices of Hawaiian (ham & pineapple) pizza around midnight at my friend’s house.  I feel as though the mugwort enhances the already stomach cleaning and warming effects of the Egyptian licorice and mint.

According to Wikipedia,

The plant, called nagadamni in Sanskrit, is used in Ayurveda for cardiac complaints as well as feelings of unease, unwellness and general malaise.

I believe this is the first time I have ever had mugwort.  It’s absolutely my new treasure!  Thanks again CSU!
